DIRECT TRANSPORT was created 15 years ago by business partners Wendy Hallam and Christopher Stone.
They began with a single vehicle and a small warehouse in Guia and the business has since grown to such an extent that there are now seven members of staff and five vehicles.
Having outgrown their premises at Guia, Direct Transport is now housed in two huge warehouses on the Vale Paraiso estate on the outskirts of Albufeira, the second of which was taken over last year. With more than 70 containers that are 90 per cent utilised all of the time, Wendy and Christopher certainly have their hands full.
Although both are pretty much hands-on in all aspects of the business, Wendy usually deals with the quotations, speaks with clients and handles the accounts whereas Christopher primarily takes care of the deliveries and the haulage side of things.
“Personally, I really enjoy dealing with people and building up confidence with them, which often leads to firm friendships,” says Wendy. “I love offering support to people that are a little nervous about moving lock, stock and barrel over here.”
The two also credit much of their success to the team they have around them both in the UK and Portugal.
Offering a full transportation and delivery service, Direct Transport can arrange everything from supplying bubble wrap and boxes to advice on re-locating goods worldwide. Many locals are currently taking advantage of the very low exchange rates to purchase all kinds of items from the UK – from foodstuffs to wheels, for example.
With a depot located at Andover in Hampshire, it is easy to order online and have it delivered there, where it can be delivered to the Algarve on a weekly basis.
Businesses have also started using their warehouses as storage facilities, where sometimes a single business may have as many as 60 or 70 pallets there at any one time.
