Different Drummers join Chemical Brothers

The Resident reporter NIKKI HALL caught up with Dick, Adam and Tweed from Different Drummer Sound System recently to find out about their involvement with this weekend’s festival and what they think of the Algarve.

How were you approached to perform at the República Independente?

We got a call from Alex Sparrow (who we’ve known since his athletico days). He pretty much sold the event to us within a couple of minutes. It’s the Stafford charm.

What was your initial response to the invite?

Can we stay for the whole weekend?

Have you been to the Algarve before, or will this be your first time here?

We’ve played in Portugal several times and it’s always fantastic. But it’s our first time in the Algarve.

Have you performed elsewhere in Portugal?

Porto and Lisbon. Lux in Lisbon is one of our favourite clubs in the world.

How long is your set going to be?

2 x 2 hours

What can we expect from it?

We’re going to do 2 sets. The first will be DJ Dick & Tweed doing a dub-influenced different drummer sound system show with vocals. And I’ll do a left-foot set which will be more Latin-influenced with broken afro, deep house and a bit of drum and bass.

What is the track that you prefer to play during a live gig to get the crowd going?

Overproof soundsystem’s “watch what you put inna” is always a massive tune at a festival.
