Dido and Aeneas in São Brás and Silves

A production of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas will be performed tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) at the Museum in São Brás and at the Cineteatro in Silves on Sunday respectively.

The opera will be performed by various groups that are affiliated to the Museum in São Brás.

The Canticorum Choir will provide the operatic vocals along with guest singer Francisco Brazão.

Aperitivo, an innovative performance group, will be acting out the opera, having risen to the challenge of acting without speaking.

Dido and Aeneas is often described as the first British opera that was written by Purcell in 1689.  It is based on a story from the fourth book of Virgil’s Aeneid about the legendary Queen of Carthage Dido and the Trojan refugee Aeneas.

When Aeneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. However, Aeneas must soon leave to found Rome but Dido cannot live without him.

The concerts will begin at 8pm. To book your tickets at São Brás, please email [email protected] and at Silves, please call 282 330 242 or 968 333 856.
