The horrific hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman in the early hours of Tuesday morning hides further barely imaginable tragedy.
The parents of Ana Patrícia Trindade lost their first child to an almost identical incident in the 90s.
At the time, their child was five years old, reports Correio da Manhã.
This week they learnt that the daughter whose birth they celebrated after the tragedy has also lost her life to a driver who didn’t bother to stop.
Neighbours describe them as heartbroken.
Their daughteer was walking home with friends from local Santo António celebrations when the car appeared in the Cintura do Porto de Lisboa area.
According to reports, the group was walking along the roadside.
The car hit Ana Patrícia and she is believed to have died instantly.
To the despair of her friends, emergency rescue teams declared death at the scene.
What no one at the time knew was that a horrified driver who witnessed the incident followed the hit-and-run driver all the way to her home.
The 45-year-old Brazilian, described as a air hostess, was later arrested by police.
CM adds that “because she was not caught in the act, she was not arrested”.
The woman’s damaged car however has been removed for forensic testing, and she was due to appear in court later today (Wednesday).
