Palm trees in Faro have been struck by the Red Palm Weevil, which has been causing major devastation across the Algarve.
In the last week, several palm trees have had to be felled on Avenida 5 de Outubro and on the road exiting Faro towards Olhão, and several more are expected to suffer the same fate.
A spokesman for Faro Câmara said the council’s environment department has been combating the plague but treatment hasn’t always been effective and is “too expensive” for the investment that is required to control the problem.
