Anyone noticing strange streaks on cars and windows last weekend very probably witnessed the unusual arrival of desert sand from North Africa.
Clouds of sand from the Sahara are more frequent in the spring and summer, but last weekend saw a “mass of air from North Africa” full of dust particles and sand hit the mainland. It was a phenomenon that could affect the quality of the air.
The sand cloud hit the regions of the Algarve and northern Portugal most, with the centre of Portugal and Madeira only being lightly affected.
