At a press conference held by the Polícia Judiciária at 18.30 on Friday 25 May, Olegário Sousa gave a description of a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The man being sought is believed to be Caucasian, between 35 and 40 years of age, of medium built, approximately 1.6 – 1.7 metres tall. The suspect has short hair and was wearing a dark (blue) jacket, long light coloured trousers and was seen on Thursday 3 May at around 21.30 in Praia da Luz. The sighting of the man suggests that he was carrying something which could have been a child.
The Polícia Judiciária is asking for anyone who saw this man to contact them urgently. They are also asking that the man come forward to the police to be ruled out of their enquiries.
Sousa confirmed that this investigation is still ongoing , with forensic tests being carried out.
Questioned by reporters Olegário Sousa confirmed that they have had numerous leads which have been followed up and there are other leads still being analysed. He confirmed that the description of the man being sought was supplied by a witness.
