Deranged attacker wounds six in city centre

A MAN, armed with a Swiss penknife, attacked six passers-by in the centre of Lisbon last Saturday morning.

The attacker, identified by police as a 22-year-old Brazilian, wounded four women and two men in a rampage that started in Avenida da República and ended in Avenida 5 de Outubro, where he was arrested by a police officer.

The man gave no explanation for the attacks but a police source described him as mentally disturbed. Apparently, after stabbing the victims in the back and neck, he announced the “coming of God”. In spite of being eventually overpowered by a policeman and handcuffed with both arms tied behind his back, the Brazilian continued to shout, “you are going to die”, at the top of his voice.

None of the six victims sustained serious injuries but were taken to hospital for treatment.
