ACCORDING TO health specialists in Portugal, the current economic crisis and consequent growing financial pressure on families are leading to an increase in the number of people suffering depression and suicides.
Doctor José Jara, a mental health specialist, said: “There is currently an increase in mental health issues among people aged 15 and 30.”
It is estimated that around 100,000 people in Portugal suffer with schizophrenia and 200,000 have bipolar disorder.
Women are also more likely to suffer depression.
