Algarve among districts on yellow alert
The Algarve is among districts on yellow alert today due to the effects of depression ‘Irene’, which is bringing horrible weather and high winds.
Beja, Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga are all equally under warning, with the likelihood of heavy rain and even thunderstorms.
Areas close to the sea should expect sea turbulence, while wind gusts are expected in the region of 75 kms/ h on low ground, with even stronger gusts across higher areas.
The yellow warning issued by sea and atmosphere institute IPMA will remain in place until tomorrow early evening.
Madeira too is being battered, with orange warnings for its mountainous regions and south coast- while the Azores has been feeling the brunt of Irene since yesterday.
With waves expected of over 4-5 metres (potentially in some areas as high as 10 metres), people should keep well away from the sea/ sea shores until Irene has moved on. Fishermen are being warned not to set out to sea at all. ND
