Science || Portuguese scientists have come up with a new technique that should leave everyone smiling.
Devised to combat the kind of bone loss in jaws that cause teeth to drop out – and make implants impossible – it is showing “promising results”, claim the team working out of Coimbra University and including one Brazilian researcher.
Due to be published in the upcoming issue of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, the technique involves taking bone grafts from elsewhere in the body, and using them to repair upper jaws so they are restored to their former anatomical ‘perfection’.
As surgical specialist Eugénio Pereira explains, the grafts then need only a few months to ‘take’ and implant surgery can go ahead.
