Dengue and zika-transmitting mosquito found in Lisbon

Portugal’s national health authority, DGS, has confirmed that a species of mosquito that can transmit dengue and zika has been identified in Lisbon, although the agents that cause the diseases have not been identified.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the DGS said that the species ‘Aedes albopictus’, whose presence had already been detected in previous years in other parts of the country, had been “identified for the first time in the city of Lisbon”.

DGS emphasises that for the time being there is no increased risk to the health of the general public.
