LAST SATURDAY, 28 members and friends of the US Democrats Abroad gathered for a picnic at the home of Emilia and Tony Otter in Aldeia de Juzo. The Resident went along and spoke to the US Democrats Abroad chairperson, Gilbert Wells, who said: “The Bush Administration is using the war in Iraq to justify cuts to social security, health care, protection of pensions and veterans’ benefits.” He continued: “We need to follow the direction of Democratic Party chairman, Howard Dean. The focus will be the Federal Elections in November 2006 when a new Congress is elected.” The Democratic Party committee in Portugal was founded in 1992 to support the election of Bill Clinton as President. Perhaps the ex US President should have been invited to join the happy gathering last week! Bob Hughes
