Demands of pandemic have stretched Portugal’s police forces ‘to the limit’

Syndicate leaders of Portugal’s PSP and GNR police forces warn members are ‘exhausted’; the demands of the job during the pandemic having stretched manpower to the absolute limit. Say reports, they are accusing the government of “ignoring” the situation and failing to provide adequate PPE (personal protective equipment).

Of the 20,000 police in both forces, only 14,000 are ‘fit for duties’. New recruits are desperately needed.
