Delta variant now in community transmission in Portugal

The Delta (Indian) variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes Covid-19 is now considered to be in community transmission within Portugal – principally in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo areas. Experts are predicting the country is careering towards a major red line (of more than 120 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) within the next two weeks. If correct, this means Portugal could face new restrictions “at the height of the summer”, explains SIC television today. Numbers in hospital have been creeping upwards for the last week, though deaths remain low.
