Two Algarve towns are celebrating the region’s famously juicy oranges this month.
Portimão is preparing to host the 15th ‘Festa da Laranja’ (Orange Party), while Silves is holding a full orange-flavoured weekend.
Taking place at the municipal market (Mercado da Avenida S. João de Deus) between February 7 and 11, the Portimão event allows visitors to buy oranges at special prices.
There will also be showcooking sessions held by Portimão’s Professional Training school DUAL, whose students will be presenting recipes inspired by the orange, while students from the Gil Eanes Professional School will be photographing the event.
The Orange Party was held under a different format last year due to the pandemic but will be returning this year to its usual programme.
The event is organised by the municipal market’s fruit and veg vendors, who aim to promote the “benefits of eating this fruit regularly” whilst also encouraging people to shop locally.
Meanwhile, Silves will be hosting the seventh ‘orange weekend’ between February 10 and 12. Two events will take place – “Fim de Semana com Sabor a Laranja” (Orange-Flavoured Weekend) and ‘Mostra Silves Capital da Laranja’ (Silves Capital of Orange Show).
Both events will aim to promote the delicious oranges produced in the Silves.
The Orange-Flavoured Weekend will see local restaurants serving a dish made with oranges, which can be an appetiser, dessert or main course.
The list of participating restaurants will be announced soon.
The Silves Capital of Orange Show will be held at FISSUL and will feature dozens of exhibitors, from orange producers and winemakers to local farmers, bakers and craftspeople.
There will also be musical entertainment, with Sara Correia (February 10), José Cid (11) and Mimo’s Orchestral Experience (12) confirmed as the headliners.
Admission will be free.
