Deficit cut in half

PORTUGAL’S PUBLIC administration debt was slashed in half by March this year, thanks to cost cutting and increased social security funds.

According to statistics by the Bank of Portugal, the areas which endured most budgetary constraints and cuts were autonomous funds and services, local and regional administration, and social security.

Public debt fell 49 per cent on the same period last year, representing 355 million euros.
