VICE MINISTER of Defence for Japan, Issei Kitagawa, was due to meet with Portuguese Secretary of State for National Defence, João Mira Gomes this week (Wednesday, May 2). The meeting was to discuss the two countries’ perspectives on defence matters.
In a recent statement, the Portuguese Secretary of State informed that this was the first time Portugal was meeting with Japan to discuss matters relating to defence.
The objective of the meeting was to discuss subjects like the diplomatic relations on defence issues between Portugal and Japan, the two countries’ participation on peace missions and the Portuguese priorities for the next presidency of the European Council, starting in June. The European Security and Defence Policy is apparently a subject of great interest to Japan.
