Defeat in League Cup opener

A worrying start to the new season for Olhanense as they go down 2-1 to Santa Clara in the first game of Phase One of the League Cup.
With only eleven eligible players, due to injuries and failure to receive international clearance for another, it was always going to be an uphill struggle after travelling 2000 kilometres to the Azores. A penalty after ten minutes – converted by Clemento – put the Algarve side behind and fifteen minutes later the day got even worse when António Rodrigo (on loan from P. Ferreira) was sent-off after picking up two yellows within five minutes.
Despite being a man down, the visitors levelled the score on fifty-eight minutes from Celestino’s free-kick. Clemento added a second for Santa Clara ten minutes later.
Olhanense had a second man sent-off when Duarte Machado (ex-Belenenses) picked up a second yellow in the final minute.
Manager António Conceição justified the absence of substitutes with the fact that Olhanense “are in the construction phase of the squad”.
Supporters will be hoping the team has been rebuilt by the time of the first league game on August 9.
On Sunday (August 3) fans will be able to make their own assessment of the team as they line up for another League Cup clash at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão. Kick-off against Tondela is 5pm. Admission: socio-members €3; non-members €5 and €10.
