TOWNS AND cities across the Algarve are getting into the Christmas spirit this week as illuminations around the region are switched on and presented to the public.

In Faro, more than 800,000 lights across 77 streets were turned on last week, while in the Loulé municipality the Christmas lights will be officially switched on tomorrow evening at 6pm in front of the municipal Câmara.

The Christmas lights in Portimão are already on and visitors to the city can now admire the decorations that span 40 streets and squares including an impressive 25 metre Christmas tree in Alameda da Praça da República.

Portimão Câmara has also arranged a variety of Christmas activities to entertain the young and the old throughout December with highlights including the temporary ice rink and artificial snow machines in the Alameda da Praça da República.

The total cost of the Christmas decorations and amusements to Portimão Câmara has been revealed as being 350,000 euros.

However, it is hoped that the commercial enterprises in the area will benefit from the predicted increase in visitors to the city during the festive period.
