‘Decentralisation’ in Lagoa as parishes receive €2.2m fund

Budget || Lagoa’s four parish councils are set to receive over €2.2 million from the town hall for the period 2014-2017. A ceremony to announce the distribution of funds, presided over by Mayor Francisco Martins, was held on May 6 and attended by the parish presidents of Lagoa-Carvoeiro, Estômbar-Parchal, Ferragudo and Porches.
Parishes were told to use the money according to previously established agreements, with the Mayor requesting that special focus be placed on the needs of underprivileged citizens and social causes.
Other important issues raised by Martins were the need to plan out financial resources in advance and implement a “policy of decentralisation” within the municipality. Following lengthy debates with the parish presidents, he feels the municipality is prepared to overcome any revenue losses that may result from the current economic climate.
Martins said meetings had been held with the Junta presidents to determine the amounts that would be allocated to each parish.
Lagoa-Carvoeiro will receive €948,000, Estômbar-Parchal €720,000, and Ferragudo and Porches will each receive €300,000.
