Government bailiffs in Russia have barred debtors from travelling abroad until they pay up, as part their unusual measures to reclaim debts.
According to the bailiffs, 82,000 foreign travel bans have been signed since they were introduced in 2008 and almost 800 million roubles (17.8 million euros) recovered from debtors, some of whom only found out about the measure at the border.
Federal Bailiff Service Director Artur Parfenchikov said: “If someone can’t keep up his payments on a 100,000 US dollars (75,200 euros) debt and then buys a package tour to Thailand … that’s not just illegal, it’s immoral.”
