Deaths in April 2022 increased more than 20% on the tally for deaths in the same period last year – and Covid-19 is not the direct cause. Deaths from Covid-19 represent just 5.8% of the total number of deaths, which was 10,120 citizens. In other words, Covid accounted for just 586 deaths, while 9,534 died from other causes. In the same month 6,573 babies were born – meaning Portugal’s demographic ‘winter’ persists.
