TAVIRA CÂMARA will be commemorating World Day Against the Death Penalty on Sunday by lighting the monument in the Praça da República as a symbolic protest and to remember those who have been executed.
According to the human rights group Amnesty International, “the death penalty is the symptom of a violent culture and not a solution for it. It is affront to human dignity and should be abolished”.
A total of 24 countries carried out executions in 2007, 88 per cent in Saudi Arabia, China, the US, Iran and Pakistan.
