Day centre facing new crisis

The Rotary-sponsored Day Centre at São Marcos da Serra is in desperate need of funds.

Due to last year’s heavy rains the roof over the main hall requires immediate attention and the drain on funds could prejudice their plans for much needed structural expansion.

This centre has provided aid and support to the area since it opened in December 2003, but all of that could now be at risk.

The Rotary Clube de Silves has, over the years, supported this centre, which is 30 kilometres from Silves, by cash injections and supplying an industrial washing machine.

However, in spite of the club’s intention to donate a further 1,000 euros when it visits the centre tomorrow (Saturday, January 27), much more is needed.

Following the clube’s highly successful Jazz Night in December, 650 euros was earmarked for São Marcos da Serra, but such is the urgency for cash the club has increased this figure.

Silves Rotarian and Clube Treasurer Herbert Chatters told The Resident: “Following on from December’s huge fund-raising success, we have fulfilled our immediate mission of aid to the children’s homes, but our involvement will be ongoing. However, São Marcos da Serra is a bridge too far in terms of our ability to generate sufficient cash quickly enough. If anyone feels that they can help by a donation to the club it would be of great value. We would like to at least double the 1,000 euros to be donated on Saturday to take care of the immediate roof problem.”

If anyone or any organisation can help call Herbert on 282 381 508 or email: [email protected].
