THE BDO Lakeside World Championships saw the emergence of a gilt edged new talent in 21-year-old Dutch star Jelle Klaasen.
While the likes of Andy Fordham dropped away tamely, “the kid” made a name for himself. Marvyn King, world number one and top seed, felt the force first, bowing out 2-4. The debutante went on to overcome England’s Paul Hogan and Shaun Greatbatch, setting up an all-Dutch final with four times champion, Raymond van Barnevelt.
The 37-year-old master took his place at the oche, with a 6-2 win against England’s number one Martin Adams. It was not to be. Jelle Klaasen threw darts beyond belief, drawing away at 5-5 to decide the title for himself with a 101 check out. A new champion was born!
