Darkness Into Light comes to Algarve to shine spotlight on mental health

An annual walking event that aims to shine a spotlight on mental health issues will be taking place in the Algarve for the first time on Saturday, May 9.

Named ‘Darkness into Light’, the event was created in Dublin in 2009 when 400 people set off to walk 5km to raise awareness about the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

It has grown steadily over the years, having taken place in 150 locations in 16 countries across five continents last year with over 200,000 people participating.
The Healthy Minds Algarve Association is bringing the event to the Algarve for the first time with the goal being to invest the amount raised into local mental health services and clinics for children and adults across the Algarve.

“Our request is simple – whatever your age or situation, walk with us, talk with us, so that together we can create a world where suicide, self-harm and stigma have been replaced by hope, self-care and acceptance,” organisers say.

The 5km walk will take place on Saturday, May 9 2020 at 5am departing from The Shack Lake Bar, Quinta do Lago.

Registrations for the event have already opened. Those interested can book their place online at www.darknessintolight.ie/algarve or www.healthymindsalgarve.org.

Early-bird tickets cost €13 for adults, €10 for seniors and students and €3 for children aged six to 17. There is also a family ticket costing €34 for two adults and up to five children. Tickets include a DIL t-shirt, water and breakfast is optional at the end of the walk, in exchange for a small donation.
