Dance scene hits town

news: Dance scene hits town

This year, the Algarve has been a hotbed of European dance talent. For 17 hours, on July 17, the Chemical Brothers festival turned the sleepy town of Algoz into one of the biggest and best dance scenes Portugal has ever seen. And now, hot on its heels, new dance nights are popping up in bars all over the Algarve. One of these is Toby Millage’s dance night, held in the Taberna de Lagos.

The bar has only been open since last November and was originally a large storage space dating back 400 years. It has now been revamped into a restaurant/dance bar with a stylish interior and a great open plan space. Throughout August, it has been host to some of the best international dance DJs.

“I’ve been living in and out of Lagos for around 24 years. And, while playing everything from opera to rock, I developed a love for ‘70s Afro-Caribbean funk music,” explained Toby. After taking the plunge, investing in two turntables and a mixer and expanding his funk/soul record collection into the biggest “this side of New York”, Toby’s talents have taken him all over the world. As a DJ, he has diversified into all kinds of dance music and, during his mid week slot in famous Lisbon club Lux, he has spun everything from hiphop/funk to reggae with Latin beats.

Toby is now organising all sorts of dance nights at the bar, so if you want something a little different, call to find out more on 919 830 591. The Taberna is on Rua Joaquim Telo, off Rua 25 de Abril. The restaurant is open from 11am until midnight every day of the year and DJing at the weekends starts at 9pm, finishing at 2am.
