Dakar revisited –  Africa race launched  in Portimão

Legendary rally veterans Jean Louis Schlesser and René Metge were in Portimão last week to launch the second edition of the Africa Eco Race, for which the Algarve city has been chosen as the starting point.

The latest challenging off-road marathon due to depart from the south of Portugal consists of a picturesque route made up of 65 per cent sandy terrain passing through Morocco and Mauritania before terminating at Senegal’s now famous ‘pink’ lake near Dakar.

As Portimão mayor Manuel da Luz welcomed the new initiative, famous Portuguese rally veterans Carlos Sousa and Elisabete Jacinto were already confirming their participation in the December 27 – January 10 spectacular.

Before then the western Algarve port will help celebrate its annual municipal day by staging the City of Portimão Rally this weekend.

A super-special stage in and around Alvor is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) evening. Proceedings will then move to the Motor Park on Sunday.
