Cutting costs

Debt-ridden Faro Câmara is hoping to reduce the bathing season in the council by a month in its latest cost-cutting move.

The request made to the Algarve Water Authority (ARH), if approved, would see the bathing season in Faro running from June 15 to September 15, while most Algarve beaches operate under the supervision of lifeguards from June 1 to September 30.

Faro Mayor Macário Correia says “paying lifeguards to be doing nothing when our beaches are not so busy is not justifiable”.

The president of Faro Lifeguards Association (AHNSF), Vítor Boniche, says the Câmara’s lack of investment in public safety not only puts people’s lives at risk but is also detrimental to tourism and the local economy.
