The Portuguese Cup final on May 29 at the National Stadium in Jamor will be disputed between Vitória, Setúbal and Benfica. Setubal went behind to a ninth-minute Zé Manuel penalty in their semi-final against Boavista but came back strongly with goals from Meyong and Bruno Ribeiro who scored the winner three minutes into extra time. Boavista’s task was made near impossible after João Pedro and Tiago were red-carded reducing the side to nine men.
Benfica enjoyed a more straight-forward victory over Liga da Honra promotion hopefuls Estrela da Amadora, Nuno Assis and Nuno Gomes, twice, scoring either side of the interval for a comfortable 3-0 win.
Benfica and Setúbal have met three times in the final of this competition with the Lisbon club coming out on top twice. In 1942/’43, Benfica won 5-1 and at the end of the 1961/’62 season, Eusébio scored twice in a 3-0 victory. Only in 1964/’65 did Setúbal get the better of their rivals winning 3-1.
