New Portimonense coach Carlos Mozer celebrated his first success when his team emerged victorious in Aveiro.
Following the narrow 1-0 first leg home win over top division Feirense, the return match was never going to be easy but the Algarveans managed to restrict their hosts to two goals while scoring one from the penalty spot themselves.
The 2-2 aggregate was maintained until the end of extra time when keeper Ivo saved Siaka Bamba’s fifth attempt to give Portimao a famous 5-4 shoot-out victory.
This is the first time that Portimonense has reached the final phase of the League Cup which sees the top eight clubs from the Superliga including Porto, Benfica and Sporting joining the draw.
