Alcoutim Mayor is determined to promote the town’s tourist potential and so summer tours have now been reintroduced by the Câmara to show residents from neighbouring villages and tourists alike its main attractions.
Alcoutim made the news recently after Census 2011 preliminary results showed that it was the Algarve council that had registered the highest population decrease in the last 10 years.
Efforts to boost Alcoutim’s profile and attract visitors and potential residents to the area are a priority for the council. Thus it has made a bus available every Wednesday to collect people from neighbouring villages and small hamlets in the hills and bring them to Alcoutim for a guided tour of the area and some “social time”.
The initiative started three years ago but the council felt it was important to reintroduce the tours during the summer.
Alcoutim Mayor Francisco Amaral said: “Many local residents come to Alcoutim just to deal with bureaucratic matters and forget to admire the town from a tourist’s perspective.
“There are many historical and cultural attractions here that people simply don’t know about.”
The Algarve Resident asked Alcoutim Câmara if guided tours of the town were available in English and were duly informed that an English-speaking guide from the Câmara provided this service free of charge for groups.
