Cultural highlights in Lagoa this month

ALFA, the Association of Literature and Film Friends, will be presenting a series of events throughout October.

Author and financial expert Derek Edwards will be giving a talk on the world financial crisis and stock markets on Monday (October 5).

The talk will contain highly subjective views but will be easy to understand for those who are totally bemused by events of the past 18 months.

The talk will take place at 7.30pm at the Convento São José in Lagoa. Tickets cost five euros and four euros for ALFA members.

On October 30, the inauguration of a highly acclaimed photography exhibition Ortszeit – Local Time will take place also at the Convento São José.

While travelling through East Germany in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin wall but before re-unification, photographer Stefan Koppelkamm felt the urge to capture a reality which he assumed would soon disappear forever. Twelve years later, he sought out each location again and took a second photograph from exactly the same standpoint.

An exhibition of a selection of Stefan Koppelkamm’s photographs will be on display in the Sala Polivalente of the convent throughout the month of November.

The Ortszeit – Local Time exhibition is sponsored by the Goethe Institut.

At 9pm on October 30, the Witten Stroke Quartet, accompanied by piano, will give a concert performing Beethoven, Schumann, Haydn and Dvorak at the Capela do Convento S. José.

Pre-booked tickets cost eight euros by calling 917 602 607 and tickets will cost 10 euros on the night.
