Culinary, medicinal and aromatic herbs

Fernanda Botelho, a member of the UK Herb Society since 1997, will be talking on knowing, growing, using and cooking with herbs at the Hapimag resort in Albufeira on Saturday, September 29, from 10am to 4pm.

A full day of ‘herby’ activities is promised and there will be 25 plants to know by touch, smell and taste.

The programme will include recognising, introducing and identifying plants, both local and others that adapt easily to a Mediterranean climate. There will be a visit to the Hapimag herb garden and a guided tour to collect herbs for an afternoon cooking session.

A further session will cover basic ideas for propagation, cultivation, harvesting, drying and keeping.   Learn more about those plants’ ancient uses, recent uses in the kitchen and as useful remedies for common ailments.

The afternoon session will be a cooking demonstration (and tastings), including starters, main courses and desserts.

Sintra-born Fernanda Botelho lived and worked as a teacher in the UK and returned to Portugal to developed several projects on environmental awareness in schools, cultural organisations and local borough councils.  

Besides participating in the Portuguese Eco-Schools project and organising workshops on medicinal plants and herbs, she writes children’s books on organic gardening. Her blog is malvasilvestre.blogspot.com    

There will be a dish of the day at the resort’s restaurant or you can choose from the standard menu or bring a picnic. Bar snacks will also be available, all at additional cost to the registration fee (see below).

Cost per person for the whole day, including tea/coffee breaks, plant list and recipes is €30, and €25 for Mediterranean Garden Society members.
