Internationally-renowned chef Eckart Witzigmann was a recent guest at Vila Vita Parc, near Porches; he took time out during his stay to swap culinary hints with the resort’s General Manager Kurt Gillig, and Hans Neuner, Executive Chef of Ocean, Vila Vita’s Michelin two-star restaurant at a private event in the Cave de Vinhos Wine Cellar. Austrian-born Witzigmann’s success spans the breadth of the industry: a restaurateur, culinary expert and cookery book author, he has also launched a renowned training school and cooked for royalty, world leaders and leading celebrities during the course of a 50-year career.
Working in top restaurants in Austria, France and Germany, Witzigmann then opened his own restaurant, Aubergine, in Munich. In 1979, he became the first German-speaking chef to win three Michelin stars, an honour held by Aubergine until the restaurant closed on his retirement in 1993.
In 1989, the Gault Millau guide awarded him the title Chef of the Century, an award only held by three other culinary legends, Paul Bocuse, Joel Robuchon and Frédy Girardet.
