Hurricane Ivan bears down on Cuba

Just as Hurricane Frances finally left the Florida region, Hurricane Ivan was looming on the horizon earlier this week. Ivan had already hit the Caribbean and strengthened as it headed towards Cuba at the beginning of this week. It caused mass destruction in the Cayman Islands and the people of Cuba were prepared for the worst. The US National Hurricane Centre has said Hurricane Ivan is the sixth-strongest storm ever to hit the Atlantic basin. It has already claimed the lives of more than 40 people in the Caribbean, and the death toll was expected to rise as Ivan strengthened to the most dangerous category five level as it moved from the Cayman Islands on to Cuba. Cuban President Fidel Castro said the government was doing everything possible to prepare for Ivan’s arrival – around 1.3 million people have been evacuated from areas expected to be hardest hit by Ivan’s winds.
