The final of the Oceânico Algarve Crown Green Bowls Open was held at the Oceânico Group’s Amendoeira Bowls Club, near Silves, on September 15 and 16.
The final was tightly contested between John Greenwood and Peter Wrigley, with John becoming the eventual winner 21-20.
John, 59, is a retired plumber heating engineer and moved permanently to the Algarve three years ago after holidaying here for many years and now lives in Nora just a few kilometres from Silves.
He used to bowl on the crown green at Hebden Bridge near Halifax in the UK and only took up bowling again this summer when he found out that there was a crown green at the Amendoeira Golf Resort.
The win means that John has automatic qualification to be in the last 32 of the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2009, which will be played at Amendoeira from October 12 to 16 and has a 10,000 pound sterling prize fund.
The Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal 2009 will be aired on Sky Sports 3 in a two-hour highlights programme on November 3 and 4 and is sponsored by ATA (Associação Turismo do Algarve), Taylor Bowls, Trofi Verde Garden and Pool Maintenance, Central de Cervejas, Tonic Underwriting Specialist European Home Insurance, Southwest Charters, as well as the Algarve Resident.
Amendoeira Bowls Club welcomes new members and free lessons are given for both flat green and crown green.
