The Bela Romão Croquet Club, near Fuseta, was on rain alert as members took to the croquet lawns for the inaugural Thanksgiving American Tournament.
Some 20 members battled through several rounds before the competition was abandoned due to inclement weather.
The guests then sat down to a Thanksgiving Feast created by chef Sarah Byrne.
The home of croquet in Portugal extends a warm welcome to newcomers this weekend as they host the national Ladies and Men’s Singles Championships; the ladies on Saturday with Sunday being reserved for the men.
Next year the club will be represented at the World Championships in England as well as welcoming more competitors from around the world who are discovering the delight of playing croquet in the Algarve.
