A 21 year old pilgrim from Croatia, visiting Portugal for World Youth Day, suffered a tragic accident on Carcavelos beach which puts him at risk of becoming tetraplegic (paralysed from the neck down). The ‘vertebro medular trauma’ suffered by the young man resulted from a dive in which he hit his head catastrophically. He had to be rescued by life guards and later assisted by firefighters due to being rendered ‘non-responsive’. The youngster was transported to Santa Maria hospital where the diagnosis of his condition was made.
