ALMADA CÂMARA is pushing for its most famous landmark – the towering Cristo-Rei figure of Christ, to be listed alongside the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio, Brazil, as one of the world’s most important religious tourism sites.
The main objective of the project is to get the Cristo-Rei and its sanctuary chapel on the same par as Fátima, Lourdes and Santiago de Compostela.
In order to upgrade the monument, the local authority is considering creating a park, leisure and cultural centre as well as a hotel at the site to attract tourists.
