Cristiano Ronaldo wins third Ballon D’Or

Portugal’s shining football star Cristiano Ronaldo won his third Ballon D’Or award at FIFA’s annual football awards gala in Zurich tonight (December 12).

Although Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer were also looking to snatch the award, Ronaldo’s fantastic performance in 2014 proved too hard to beat.

For Real Madrid, the Portuguese footballer won the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish ‘Taça do Rei’, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In an emotional acceptance speech, Ronaldo admitted that 2014 was an “unforgettable” year for him.

“Winning this kind of an award is unique. It gives me motivation to keep working hard,” the 29-year-old footballer said.

He also thanked “everyone who voted for me, as well as my coach, my teammates, my supporters and my family” and said that he hopes to match Lionel Messi’s four Ballon D’Or awards in 2015.

“I want to go down in history as football’s best player ever,” he admitted.

It is the second year in a row that Ronaldo wins the Ballon D’Or. He had already won in 2008.
