The Algarve has registered the greatest fall in the construction sector due to the economic crisis, according to the construction companies, public works and services association (AECOPS).
“The number of licensed apartments in the first seven months of this year has fallen by 62 per cent in the Algarve, which is 12 per cent higher than the national average,” said an AECOPS report.
According to the association’s general director, Fernando Paes Afonso, the Algarve is in a “particularly unfavourable position” in terms of public investment.
The launch of public works projects also fell in the Algarve by 73.8 per cent from the start of the year until September, while it is also the region with the highest unemployment rates in the construction sector.
