‘Crime boss’ arrested on Friday in major PJ ‘swoop’ already free

An alleged crime boss, arrested on Friday and suspected of leading a major gun-running network, is already ‘back on the streets’. Correio da Manhã reports that 48-year-old Paulo Batista has been bailed on the basis that he reports to police ‘periodically’. He was detained with two others in ‘Operation Scorpion’ which also saw various guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, almost €70,000 in cash and “some drugs” apprehended. Mr Batista has served ⅔ of a nine year three month sentence for crimes connected to “Mafia of the Night” in Lisbon and for a murder in Spain, adds the paper. The two other men arrested last Friday have been remanded in preventive custody.
