Faro Municipality is to launch a public tender for the design, construction and operation of a crematorium, which will be the first in the Algarve.
The subject was discussed at a meeting in Faro Câmara and will be submitted to the Municipal Assembly for discussion and approval.
Faro Mayor Macário Correia told the Algarve Resident: “We have had many requests from people for the construction of a crematorium in the Algarve. People have to travel a long way to the nearest crematorium, which is located in Ferreira do Alentejo. Macário Correia told the Algarve Resident that the crematorium, which will cost €1 million to build, will start operating next year to “solve an obvious need of the Algarve residents”.
As well as providing a service in the Algarve, the project will also raise income for Faro Municipality as the company that wins the tender will have to pay a monthly rent and a percentage of fees received.
The crematorium will be built in the city’s new cemetery, located at Estrada da Penha.
