TEACHERS IN Maharashtra, India, poured cow urine on low-caste students, last week, in order to cleanse them and extinguish the evil inside them. Upper caste, Sharad Kaithade, ordered the ritual after he took over, as head teacher, from a backward caste. The students’ faces and test papers were sprayed while they sat an exam. Two teachers were arrested after parents went to the police. Backward caste people, or Dalits, are still regularly beaten for defying unwritten segregation laws like worshipping in the same temple as upper castes, even though this is against India’s secular constitution.
