Covid transmission below 1 in Portugal

After all the negative soundbites of recent weeks, the latest weekly report compiled by INSA (public health institute Dr Ricardo Jorge) shows that Covid transmission in Portugal (the Rt level) is below 1. This is crucial in limiting spread of the virus, which is currently dominated by the highly infectious BA.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant (a much milder form of SARS-CoV-2 than the original strains, but one that eludes current vaccines). Case numbers too are falling. There is no mention in reports today on deaths (which have been affecting elderly/ vulnerable people irrespective of vaccine status).
