Covid tests should start on ‘waste water’, advises expert

Henrique Barros, one of the panel of experts advising the government through the pandemic, has been talking at the Infarmed meeting this afternoon on testing, and how it will need to be used for ‘general vigilance’, particularly in the case of asymptomatic carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He suggests tests should be carried out on waste water, to “understand the dynamic of infection before it becomes evident among us”. For Barros, an epidemiologist at ISPUP, the institute of public health at Porto University, antigen tests are the best form of testing people, due to their relative cheapness, the speed with which they give results and their high level of “specificity”.
