Covid outbreak on cruise ship scuttles New Year plans for 4,000 passengers

The massive AIDAnova cruise ship, en route to Madeira to watch the fireworks, saw its itinerary go up in smoke after 52 purportedly fully-vaccinated crew members tested positive for Covid-19.

The State of the art vessel (it is the world’s first cruise ship that operates completely using liquified natural gas) has been held up in Lisbon while the crew is substituted.

Infected crew members have already left the ship to isolate in nearby hotels (all of them described as asymptomatic), while passengers who test negative are being allowed to leave if they want to (which some appear to have done).

All being well, the ship will leave Lisbon tomorrow, bound for the Canary islands.
