Countdown begins for Portugal Masters

It’s just one more week before Portugal’s biggest golfing event begins at the Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura. The 10th Portugal Masters will take place from October 20 to 23 and was officially presented on Tuesday (October 11) by the European Tour and Turismo de Portugal at the national golf centre in Jamor.

With a €2 million prize money, the tournament will feature some of the game’s top players, including last year’s winner Andy Sullivan and “record-breaking rookie” Thomas Pieters.

Providing stiff competition to the duo will be former Portugal Masters champion Alex Levy, who won the tournament two years ago and recently clinched his third European Tour with a victory in the Porsche European Open.

Also on the list of competitors are Swede Alex Noren and Spaniards Álvaro Quiros and José Maria Olazábal, as well as former Ryder Cup stars Victor Dubuisson and Jamie Donaldson.

Portugal will have five professional golfers taking part, including Ricardo Gouveia, Tiago Cruz, João Carlota, Hugo Santos and João Ramos.

Peter Adams, director of international championships for the European Tour, believes the tournament will be “fantastic”.

“Players love coming to Portugal, the course is fantastic and very close to the airport,” he said, adding that he hopes the tournament will remain in the country “for many years”.

According to the European Tour website, more than 290,000 golf fans have visited the Algarve since the region started hosting the Portugal Masters.
